Southern Cross Pet Insurance Review NZ

Updated November 02, 2024 · 10 min read

Southern Cross is one of New Zealand's most recognisable and popular pet insurance providers but how do their pet insurance plans compare to the competition?

Southern Cross has New Zealand's cheapest accident-only pet insurance plan and most flexible comprehensive pet insurance plan, making them a really great choice if you want cheap pet insurance or if you want to customise your cover and premiums.

Despite this, both their AcciPet and more-comprehensive PetCare plans don't cover many secondary conditions/treatments like third party liability, dental and vet consultations. Their PetCare plan also has one of the lowest policy limits of any comprehensive pet insurance plan in New Zealand (up to $15,000 compared to $20,000 or even $25,000 at other companies) which is bad news if you are facing a particularly large vet bill.

If you're after extra cover Southern Cross does have optional add-ons for vet consultations, day-to-day care and dental with their PetCare Plan. While these will increase your monthly premiums this flexibility allows you to only pay for the cover you want.

Southern Cross is one of the only NZ pet insurance companies with a flexible excess ($100 to $500), flexible co-payment (10% to 30%), and flexible policy limit ($2,500 to $25,000) which we appreciate for the same reasons outlined above.

Otherwise, Southern Cross has very competitive discounts with up to 10% off your premiums if you insure multiple pets, are a Southern Cross Health Society member and pay annually along with New Zealand's best pet insurance sign up offer of 6 weeks of free insurance worth $2,000 for puppies and kittens.

There are also barely any hidden condition limits or stand down periods with Southern Cross's policies.

When compared to the best pet insurances in New Zealand, Southern Cross earns its place as one of New Zealand's best pet insurers although PD Insurance covers slightly more conditions/treatments with a higher policy limit and lower excess/co-payment (even if they do have more condition limits to be aware of).

Southern Cross Pet Insurance Plans Compared

*The average monthly costs of pet insurance for policies listed on this page are based on quotes obtained for a six month-old female Labrador Retriever and a six month-old Domestic Shorthair. Our example pets are desexed and we've picked the maximum policy limit, excess and co-payment where we had the option (a moderately expensive option). We haven't selected any add-ons.

Which Southern Pet Insurance Plan is Best?

Southern Cross offers two pet insurance plans to New Zealanders - their accident-only AcciPet plan and their comprehensive PetCare plan that also includes optional add-ons.

It's hard to say which is better as the two plans are built for different levels of cover, and are also very flexible meaning that you can customise your premiums to suit your own needs (and even customise your cover with the PetCare plan).

The AcciPet plan just covers accidental injury with an industry-standard $5,000 annual policy limit and flexible $100 to $500 excess and 10% to 30% co-payment.

The PetCare plan has the same optional excess and co-payment and you can choose a policy limit of between $2,500 and $15,000. This plan also includes optional dental, consultation and day-to-dare care (eg. check up, vaccinations, desexing, microchipping) cover.

Overall, the PetCare plan gets a slightly higher rating from us due to it's increased flexibility which allows you to get full accident and injury cover at a cheap price by choosing a lower policy limit.

How Does Southern Cross Pet Insurance Compare to Alternatives?

Southern Cross is one of our top rated pet insurance companies in New Zealand due to their quality discounts, affordable and flexible policies and relatively insignificant stand down periods and condition limits. Here's how they compare to other pet insurances.

Southern Cross has comparable stand down periods to other NZ pet insurances. There's no stand down period for accidental injury, it's the standard 21 days for illnesses and then 90 days for dental, cruciate ligament injury and patella luxation, which is not as long as some insurers although others, like Tower, have no stand down periods for some of these conditions

Southern Cross has very few condition limits compared to other policies in New Zealand. In fact, they only have a $2,500 or $5,000 condition limit for cruciate ligament injury (the amount depends on your policy limit) which is fewer condition limits than most other companies. For example, PD Insurance has condition limits on vet consultations, hereditary conditions, cruciate ligament injury, patella luxation, accidental ingestion and third party liability.

Southern Cross has some of the most generous discounts of any pet insurance company in New Zealand with a 5% multi-pet discount, 2.5% Southern Cross Health Society member discount and 2.5% direct debit discount when paying annually plus 6 weeks of free insurance for kittens or puppies. Cove is the only better insurer in this respect with up to 20% in discounts available.

Southern Cross has New Zealand's cheapest pet insurance plan in their AcciPet plan and they also have a very affordable full-cover PetCare plan. Read more

Southern Cross has small policy limits on their full-cover PetCare plan ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 depending on the level you chose. Compared to Cove's $25,000 policy limit, this is significantly less cover although if you want cheaper premiums, Southern Cross's flexible limits are much more attractive.

Southern Cross has flexible excesses between $100 and $500 and co-payments between 10% and 30% on both of their policies. This is very desirable as it gives you the freedom to chose your level of cover and premiums although we do appreciate PD Insurance's plans that have a low $200 excess and no co-payment.

Southern Cross's cover is less comprehensive than other insurances. Their AcciPet plan doesn't cover vet consultations or any other claims like for third party liability (whereas PD Insurance's Accident Plan does). Their PetCare plan also only covers accidental injury, illness and hereditary conditions whereas other insurers like AA cover dental, consultations, pre-existing conditions, emergency boarding, overseas treatments and more (although they do offer dental, day to day care and vet consultation cover as an add-on).

So, overall, Southern Cross's plans are right up there with the best and although they don't cover as many conditions as other insurances, they still cover most major illnesses and injuries with flexible premiums and affordable prices.

Southern Cross Pet Insurance User Reviews

If you go looking for user reviews for Southern Cross Pet Insurance you'll probably notice two things; they're hard to find, and they suck. This is quite strange given how popular Southern Cross is.

Given our positive experiences with Southern Cross the best explanation seems to be that they do not solicitate reviews from customers like other insurers do (who takes the time to write a positive review!?). This means that only the most disgruntled customers probably took the time to find a place to review Southern Cross.

The general feeling of unhappiness centered around premium increases and the fact that Southern Cross used to have no excess but now all of their plans have an excess. They also changed their policy structures so that some conditions became add-ons which meant policies increased as well.

This highlights the importance of understanding that ALL New Zealand pet insurances will increase with age, it is not unique to Southern Cross, although their price hikes may have been larger (it's hard to know). Pet insurance prices increase because its riskier to insure older pets and also when inflation grows, it becomes more expensive to treat them.

Otherwise, some users didn't understand what was and wasn't covered so they were frustrated to learn about the exclusions on their policies.

In saying this, we did find some positive users on Reddit who appreciated easy claims and good support.

Overall, Southern Cross Pet Insurance has 2.2 stars on Trustpilot from 8 reviews, although we found no Google or Feefo reviews which are generally a lot more positive and have a lot more reviewers (it seems like Southern Cross is secure enough in their reputation that they don't solicit or incentivize users to review them)

We have collected some user reviews below which highlight these points:

I've found Southern Cross to be excellent, plus you can pay for add ons to put towards dental/prescription foods etc (which not every insurance company offers). Its more expensive but pretty comprehensive coverage options. Pet n Sur can be good too. I'd recommend staying away from PD Pet Insurance though. Certain breeds can be subject to exclusions, so have a chat to them about your individual pet. Southern Cross also offer a free 6 week policy for new puppies/kittens.

I’ve used Southern Cross and they are pretty good and fast at processing refunds. But they still require you to pay and be reimbursed.

Second Southern Cross. They've paid out on every claim we've made for our pets (and we've definitely calmed more than we've paid in insurance so far). Good customer service too

Quadrupled my costs over 4 years, have barely ever claimed anything. Recently I had over $1,000 of expenses and did they cover anything, nope. We don't cover skin conditions (an infection), we don't cover teeth, we don't cover this, we don't cover that. It is so not worth it. I have been so loyal to Southern Cross but they don't reward that loyalty and I am not sure exactly what the policy does cover because any time I have ever tried I have been declined. The first and only time I ever claimed I had to fight them for it. Save your money or review the best plans. This company definitely isn't it.

Like many other pet owners we were loyal to Southern Cross for many many years and today, upon receipt of the policy renewal documents, we were slammed with hundreds of dollars added to our elderly pet's policy, where as before we have always had 100% cover. Now co-payments, excesses, consults now viewed as an add-on, and increased premiums, etc etc have been added to our policy. Needless to say we are beyond disappointed and we are sorry to come to the conclusion that because Southern Cross are aware that our elderly pet will not be able to get cover with any other insurer, because of his age, they have decided to make a buck, as the saying goes, by adding all of these "extras" to the new policy. We now face some heartbreaking decisions that will need to be made.

This is a scam. Don't get Southern Cross Pet Insurance for you pets. They dont cover anything not even consultation fees to the vet yet they charge me money regularly over the course of the past 4 years. They only cover "accidents" but not all. Don't waste your money on it

Customer service is absolutely atrocious. You don't even get acknowledgement for lodging a claim until you contact them asking if they have received your claim. I only received the acknowledgement of my claim a week after lodgement when I followed up. No updates are provided and you're just sitting in the dark. They requested the medical history of my pet from the Vet and it was sent to me but there was no way of sending the history to them because the only way I could contact them was through the form on their website since the only email response I got from them was from a noreply email address. The staff are quite rude too and unhelpful. There's no support. It was a shocking experience considering how much premium they charge us. Would not recommend Southern Cross Pet Insurance.

Total disappointment! I had premium insurance since the beginning, and when my dog had an allergy, they declined my claim as according to the vet notes he had some itchy feet. Come on! Pre-existing condition? Are you serious? In addition, I’d like to change the pet owner to myself instead of my partner, so they switched me to another policy with co-payments and full package pre-existing conditions. And at the end, I couldn’t return my existing policy. Unprofessional way to deal with clients… never-ever will recommend it.

We have had southern cross pet insurance since 2018 for our cats and then our dog. We had the better cover that gave no excess and no copay. In the last 12 months they have jacked up their prices and included excesses and co pays on plans that are now almost double the price. Feel pretty disappointed being with them for 6 years and having the policy’s become more expensive to claim on and more expensive to pay for at the same time. To almost match our old plans the price went from $65 up to $125.

Just received an email from Southern Cross to let me know they're adding a $250 excess and a 10% co-payment to my policy. I currently pay $640 yearly for one 3 year old cat, which was previously for a 5k cover limit with $0 copay and $0 excess. Ended up worthwhile for an ear surgery (polyp removal) he had to have last year, but not sure it's worth it for what's now looking like $1000/yr in insurance.

Is Southern Cross Pet Insurance Trustworthy?

Yes, Southern Cross Pet Insurance is trustworthy.

Given their status as New Zealand's biggest heath insurance provider and a household name it doesn't really need to be said but in case you wanted more proof:

Southern Cross paid out 65,000 pet insurance claims in 2023 and won Reader's Digest most popular Pet Insurance brand in 2024. They are also partners with Pet Refuge which supports pets from homes affected by domestic violence and are a proud sponsor of the New Zealand Veterinary Association.

Southern Cross' customer support is available via email or phone between business hours and their website has an extensive FAQ section which we expect from insurance providers but still appreciate.

Southern Cross Pet Insurance is underwritten by Southern Cross Pet Insurance Limited which has a A (strong) financial strength rating from Standard & Poor's Australia.

Southern Cross Pet Insurance FAQs

  • Southern Cross has two pet insurance plans in New Zealand.

    • AcciPet Plan - Southern Cross' affordable accident-only insurance with a flexible $100 to $500 excess and 10% to 30% co-payment.

    • PetCare Plan - Southern Cross' comprehensive insurance with cover for accidents, illnesses and hereditary conditions with a flexible excess, co-payment and policy limit between $2,500 and $15,000

  • We prefer Southern Cross' PetCare Plan because it has the same conditions and flexible excess/co-payment as their AcciPet plan but it also covers illnesses and hereditary conditions as well as having add-ons for dental, day to day care and vet consultations.

  • Yes, Southern Cross had New Zealand's cheapest accident only pet insurance plan $13.85 per month for our example dog and $6.76 per month for our example cat. Their comprehensive PetCare plan was also one of New Zealand's cheaper pet insurances at $57.97 per month for our example dog and $26.53 per month for our example cat.

See more cheap pet insurance plans in New Zealand here.

  • No, Southern Cross only offers cat insurance and dog insurance at the moment.

  • No, we rated PD Insurance higher than Southern Cross pet insurance.

While Southern Cross has cheaper and more flexible pet insurance plans with fewer condition limits and stand down periods than PD Insurance, PD Insurance has no co-payment and only a $200 excess and all of their plans cover more conditions/treatments than comparable Southern Cross plans like dental, third party liability and vet consultations.

  • No, we also reviewed Cove's pet insurance plans and rated two of (their Major and Major + Minor Plans) higher than all of Southern Cross's pet insurance plans.

We liked Cove's plans better because their premiums are cheaper on average, they have higher or the same policy limits for similar cover, their cover is broader including things like vet consultations, parasite treatments and emergency boarding and because they have fewer stand down periods and condition limits than Southern Cross.

  • Southern Cross Pet Insurance is underwritten by Southern Cross Pet Insurance Limited which has a A (strong) financial strength rating from Standard & Poor's Australia.

Conclusion: Is Southern Cross Pet Insurance Good?

Yes, even though it's not our favourite pet insurance company in New Zealand we still rate Southern Cross pet insurance highly.

We recommend Southern Cross for pet owners that want the cheapest accident only plan - which they'll find at Southern Cross. While Southern Cross' policies cover fewer conditions/treatments than most pet insurances in New Zealand they have flexible excesses and co-payments meaning you can customize your premiums. With add-ons available for their comprehensive PetCare plan you get even more flexibility in your cover.

For deeper cover consider AA Pet Insurance or PD Insurance, which also has no co-payment and just a $200 excess.
