AA Pet Insurance Review NZ

Updated September 23, 2024 · 9 min read

AA only has one pet insurance plan for New Zealanders but it is the most comprehensive pet insurance available in New Zealand (if you count the number of condition/treatments covered) covering everything from dental to parasite treatments and even pre-existing conditions for symptom free pets. It also one of the cheapest pet insurances in New Zealand (especially considering the cover you get).

AA's pet insurance also stands out for being the only pet insurance in New Zealand to offer a free VetChat membership for online vet consultations.

Despite this, AA's pet insurance plan has a relatively low policy limit ($5,000 to $15,000), has quite a lot of condition limits ($300 for vet consultations, $600 for dental illnesses, $1,500 for emergency boarding, $3,200 for cruciate ligament conditions and $4,000 for intervertebral disc disease) and a relatively high co-payment (20%).

Otherwise AA has pretty standard age limits of between 8 weeks and 9 years old for new pets, along with a reasonable 5% discount for AA members, and a Paw Care Package add-on for routine care including vaccinations.

This all means that AA's Pet Insurance is a good option if you want broad cover that won't cost a lot. Do be aware though that this comes with slightly higher costs at the vet (from your co-payment) and that some of your largest vet bills may not be fully covered (if they are subject to specific condition limits).

We recommend also considering Cove as another cheap alternative with very few condition limits and a policy limit of up to $25,000 or PD Insurance which despite having several condition limits has no co-payment so covers more of your vet bills up to $20,000.

AA Pet Insurance Details

*The average monthly costs of pet insurance for policies listed on this page are based on quotes obtained for a six month-old female Labrador Retriever and a six month-old Domestic Shorthair. Our example pets are desexed and we've picked the maximum policy limit, excess and co-payment where we had the option (a moderately expensive option). We haven't selected any add-ons.

How Does AA Pet Insurance Compare to Alternatives?

Overall, AA is the most comprehensive pet insurer in New Zealand and is also quite cheap but it has relatively low policy limits, several condition limits and stand down periods to be aware of along with a high co-payment.

Here's how AA Pet Insurance compares to other New Zealand pet insurances:

AA Pet Insurance has the most comprehensive plans in New Zealand if you just count the number of conditions/treatments they cover. Their cover includes accidental injury, illnesses, dental, pre-existing conditions (waived with a vet's note) and parasite treatments. Petnsur and Southern Cross also cover more conditions/treatments than other pet insurance companies.

AA Pet Insurance has a flexible excess which means you can choose between paying between $0 and $500 for every claim you make (the bigger your excess the smaller your monthly premiums will be).

AA Pet Insurance has a relatively high co-payment of 20% whereas PD Insurance plans have no co-payment.

AA Pet Insurance doesn't have many discounts. They only offer 5% off for AA members whereas companies like Cove offer up to 20% in discounts (10% multi-policy discount  and 10% discount when paying annually).

AA Pet Insurance has one of New Zealand's cheapest comprehensive pet insurance plans averaging $43.94 for our example dog and $23.29 for our example cat per month. Only Petcover's Mid-range Plan Core and Cove's Major Plan were cheaper ($34.15 for dogs and $19.24 or $39.33 for dogs and $16.55 for cats).

AA Pet Insurance has quite low policy limits of between $5,000 and $15,000 when compared to the likes of Cove and SPCA who both offer plans with $25,000 in cover.

AA Pet Insurance has reasonable stand down periods of 14 days for illness, 6 months for cruciate ligament injury and 6 months for dental.

AA Pet Insurance has relatively strict condition limits, offering a maximum reimbursement of $300 for vet consultations, $600 for dental illnesses, $1,500 for emergency boarding, $3,200 for cruciate ligament conditions and, $4,000 for intervertebral disc disease. Southern Cross and Cove only have condition limits for cruciate ligament injury and emergency boarding respectively.

AA Pet Insurance User Reviews

We searched the internet for reviews of AA Pet Insurance (Google, Feefo, TrustPilot) and found only one comment from kiwiinnewzealand on Reddit who said that he recommends AA for pet owners.

It's a bit curious to have no online reviews, especially given the popularity of AA pet insurance in NZ. The major reason for this is probably that AA does not solicit reviews from customers. It also means there have not been enough disgruntled customers who have bothered to go online and review AA.

AA was awarded Canstar's 2023 Most Satisfied Customers Award with a 5-Star Rating in overall satisfaction, alongside receiving Reader's Digest 2022 Quality Service Award for pet insurance so we wouldn't worry too much about their lack of reviews.

I have AA Pet insurance for my dog. Easy claims process, very quick to confirm and pay out.

Is AA Insurance Trustworthy?

Yes, AA is one of New Zealand's most recognisable and trustworthy insurance companies, and AA pet insurance is no different.

AA Pet Insurance won the Most Satisfied Customers Award in 2023 from Canstar and the Quality Service Award from Reader's Digest in 2022.

As an AA Pet Insurance customer, some of your premiums will also go towards the New Zealand Epilepsy Assist Dog Trust, an organisation partnered with AA to enable people living with severe epilepsy to achieve independence.

AA Pet Insurance policies are administered and managed by PetSure (Australia) Pty Ltd, and are underwritten by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd. Hollard has been given a financial strength rating of A (Strong) by Standard & Poor's.

AA Pet Insurance FAQs

  • AA only has one pet insurance plan which covers a range of conditions/treatments including accidental injury, illness, dental and vet consultations. It has a $0 to $500 excess, 20% co-payment and annual policy limit between $5,000 and $15,000.

  • Yes, AA pet insurance is among the cheapest full-coverage pet insurances in New Zealand. Considering the wide range of conditions covered by their plan it is good value for money.

  • No, currently AA only offers insurance for cats and insurance for dogs in New Zealand.

  • No, we rated PD Insurance higher than AA insurance because PD insurance has no co-payment and a higher policy limit although PD Insurance is more expensive and has more conditions limits.

  • No, we rated Southern Cross Pet Insurance higher than AA Pet Insurance because Southern Cross's plans are more flexible (you can chose add-ons, your excess and your co-payment) while remaining affordable although though do cover slightly fewer conditions and are slightly more expensive.

  • AA Pet Insurance policies are underwritten by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd. Hollard has been given a financial strength rating of A (Strong) by Standard & Poor's.

Conclusion: Is AA Pet Insurance Good?

Yes, AA Pet Insurance is one of our top 10 rated pet insurances in New Zealand. AA stands out as a particularly comprehensive option (eg. many conditions/treatments covered) at an affordable price.

However, AA Pet Insurance is also lacking in that it's policy has a relatively low maximum limit ($15,000), it has a relatively high co-payment (20%) and several hidden condition limits which may surprise those who don't careful read their policy wording. It is also not suitable for pet owners who want an accident-only pet insurance as they only have one full-coverage plan available.

For this reason we recommend AA only to pet owners who want a cheaper full coverage plan as most other full-coverage pet insurance plans in New Zealand have higher policy limits so are more expensive than AA's pet insurance.
