PD Insurance Review NZ

Updated November 02, 2024 · 10 min read

PD Insurance is one of New Zealand's most well-known pet insurers thanks to their aggressive marketing and the fact that they specialize in pet insurance unlike almost all other providers who offer car, health, travel and a range of other insurance products.

Overall, we think PD insurance deserves its great reputation as our experts rated their Deluxe Plan and Accident Plan the two best pet insurance policies in New Zealand.

PD insurance stands out for having no co-payment, and a low excess (meaning you'll almost always avoid large vet bills) while remaining both comprehensive and affordable. PD's Deluxe Plan is also one of the only Pet Insurances to cover dental conditions in New Zealand.

The biggest downside to PD insurance's plans are their hidden stand down periods and condition limits which include having to wait 180 days before making claims on conditions like cruciate ligament injury, patella luxation and dental as well as only being able to claim up to $200 per year for vet consultations and $7,500 per claim even though their Deluxe Plan's annual limit is $20,000.

This means that if any one condition requires over $7,500 in vet bills, you're own your own.

Otherwise, PD Insurance has a competitive one month of free pet insurance sign up offer and long eligibility period of 6 weeks to 9 years old for their full cover plans and 6 weeks to 12 years for their accident-only plan.

PD Insurance also boasts 2 day claims processing (in 95% of cases), their policies are cancellable any time and they have won numerous online awards from MoneyHub, Canstar and Reader's Digest.

When compared with New Zealand's top pet insurances, PD Insurance rises to the top as our favourite provider although if you're concerned about their condition limits than a better option might be Cove Pet Insurance which has a $25,000 policy limit and only a $1,500 limit on claims for emergency boarding.

PD Insurance Plans Compared

*The average monthly costs of pet insurance for policies listed on this page are based on quotes obtained for a six month-old female Labrador Retriever and a six month-old Domestic Shorthair. Our example pets are desexed and we've picked the maximum policy limit, excess and co-payment where we had the option (a moderately expensive option). We haven't selected any add-ons.

Which PD Insurance Plan is Best?

PD Insurance offers 3 different levels of cover for pet owners in New Zealand, two full coverage plans, their Classic Plan and Deluxe Plan, and an accident-only plan, their Accident Plan.

All PD Insurance plans have a excess of $100, $150 or $200 (you can choose a higher or lower excess which will increase or decrease your monthly premiums slightly). With all PD Insurance plans you'll also get the first month of insurance free as well as a 5% multi pet discount and $150 when you switch to a PD Insurance policy.

The major difference between these plans are the condition and overall policy limits which are much higher with the Deluxe Plan, lower with the Classic Plan and the lowest with the Accident Plan. Another major difference is that only the Deluxe Plan covers dental treatments. Naturally this also makes the Deluxe Plan the most expensive of the three plans. The Accident Plan also has a slightly longer eligibility for new pets (12 years vs 9 years).

Overall, we think PD's Deluxe Plan is their best policy because it provides the most cover for your dog or cat while remaining affordable with a low excess, no-copayment and a competitive monthly premium cost.

How Does PD Insurance Compare to Alternatives?

PD Insurance is our favourite pet insurance provider in New Zealand and excels in many, but not all respects. PD Insurance earns high ratings from us mainly due to how comprehensive their policies are but also because they are the only pet insurance company in New Zealand with no co-payment on all of their plans.

Here's how PD Insurance compares to other New Zealand pet insurances:

PD Insurance has some of the most comprehensive plans in New Zealand. Their Accident Plan also covers vet consultations (which isn't a guarantee) as well as third party liability whereas their Classic and Deluxe plans also cover hereditary conditions (for pets that are symptom free after two years). Their Deluxe Plan is also one of two pet insurance plans that covers Dental (not as an add-on). AA is the only pet insurer to also offer this cover by default. AA also covers symptom free pre-existing conditions, parasite treatments, emergency boarding and overseas treatments (in Australia) making it New Zealand's most comprehensive pet insurance.

PD Insurance has very low excesses. You can choose between a $100, $150 and $200 excess with all PD Insurance policies. Excesses in New Zealand range from $0 to $1,000 (which means you have to pay up to $1,000 for every claim you make) and even though Cove and AA offer a $0 excess option they require a 20% co-payment.

PD Insurance is New Zealand's only pet insurance with no co-payment, expect for Petnsur's Rhodium Plan which also has no co-payment but a higher $300 excess. Other insurers have co-payments between 10% and 30% (which means you have to pay up to 30% of all your vet bills).

PD Insurance's discounts are competitive but not the best available in New Zealand. You can get your first month for free when signing up with PD Insurance as well as $150 when switching pet insurer and 5% off when insuring multiple pets but compared to Cove which has 20% in discounts plus a $100 discount for your first three months and whenever you refer a friend we still wish for more ways to save.

PD Insurance's plans are among the most expensive plans in New Zealand. This is mainly because they have no co-payment and a low excess though (so you'll pay more for your monthly premiums but much less when you have a vet bill). Southern Cross Pet Insurance has New Zealand's cheapest accident only plan ($13.85 for dogs or $6.76 for cats) whereas Petcover's Mid-range Plan Core, Cove's Major Plan and AA's Accidental Injuries + Illness Plan all had premiums averaging between $35 and $45 for dogs and $15 and $25 for cats.

PD Insurance has reasonable policy limits. The industry standard $5,000 applies to their accident-only plan while the Classic Plan's annual limit is $10,000 and the Deluxe Plan's limit is $20,000. Cove offers a $25,000 annual limit as does SPCA, for their Big Stuff Cover Plan although the chances that you'll need to claim this much in one year are very unlikely.

PD Insurance has long stand down periods for several conditions/treatments. You'll have to wait 21 days before making claims for illnesses, accidental ingestion, and poisoning as well as 180 days for third party liability, cruciate ligament injury, patella luxation and dental illnesses. Some pet insurances, like Tower, only have stand down periods for a couple of conditions eg. 14 days for illnesses (14 days) and 90 days for dental.

Southern Cross has comparable stand down periods to other NZ pet insurances. There's no stand down period for accidental injury, it's the standard 21 days for illnesses and then 90 days for dental, cruciate ligament injury and patella luxation, which is not as long as some insurers although others, like Tower, have no stand down periods for some of these conditions.

PD Insurance has some of the most restrictive condition limits in New Zealand. These include a $200 limit per visit for vet consultations, $10,000 annual limit for third party liability and either a $5,000 per claim limit for the Classic Plan or a $7,500 per claim limit for the Deluxe Plan. Cove is much better in this respect with only a $1,500 limit for emergency boarding and a $25,000 policy limit.

In short, PD Insurance excels for their low excess and no co-payment meaning that even if your monthly premiums are a bit more expensive, your vet bills will not be large (unless you max-out your per claim limit). This makes PD a great option if you are looking for a well-rounded pet insurance that will protect you against large vet bills.

PD Insurance User Reviews

PD Insurance might not always get 5 star reviews but compared to all other pet insurance companies in New Zealand we found their online reviews to be much more comprehensive, specific, and genuine.

As you can see in the examples we collected below, many PD Insurance reviews reference specific events or help that people got from specific people at PD. This probably means that these reviews are genuine and were not solicited (as many more generic reviews seem to be).

There were also many more positive reviews for PD insurance than for most other NZ pet insurers.

Generally, the things that stood out when reading PD Insurance user reviews were the care of the customer service team, the fast claims processing, and the extra mile the team went, for example when a pet passed away that a card and chocolates were sent to the family.

In terms of negative reviews, one thing that stood out was that some pet owners did not realise what their policy did and did not cover - specifically accidental ingestion was mentioned several times. This is a pretty common complaint among pet owners against insurance companies and is why we always stress reading the conditions of your plan thoroughly before deciding if pet insurance is right for you.

Most negative comments we found also had replies from the team at PD with specific steps on how to get more information as to why something was not covered and we even found one where they offered to review an old case to see if they had made a mistake.

Overall, PD Insurance has 4.1 stars on Trustpilot from 110 reviews (which is a very high rating for so many reviews), along with a 4.3 star average from 408 reviews on Google. Generally, we would say PD insurance customers had an excellent experience with PD, as long as they understood what was and wasn't covered by their pet insurance.

You'll find some of the positive and negative PD insurance user reviews we collected below.

Team PD insurance: You are a delight to work with. I feel blessed to have partnered with you for my little Mushu. The claims section on the website is very user friendly and straightforward. Clinical notes and invoices is all you need. The claim was approved and settled in less than 24 hours. Special thanks to Nomathemba who helped us. Well done.

Highly recommend PD pet insurance. Amazing service, and so efficient with the claim I made on a Sunday and it was sorted by Monday morning! I wasn’t expecting such a fast response which was really nice after a pretty stressful weekend with our furbaby at the emergency vet. Also whenever I have needed to call about anything the team are friendly and so helpful. Thank you so much 🙏🥰💚

A few months after taking out insurance, unfortunately, we had to bid farewell to our beloved cat as she crossed the rainbow bridge. Throughout the process, everything was handled smoothly, and there were no hassles at all. After canceling the insurance, a small package arrived at our home with a thoughtful message card and chocolates. Although it may appear to be a standard gesture for those who have lost a family member, we were deeply touched by this unexpected act of kindness. I genuinely want to express my gratitude in this way to everyone involved, especially to Karlie and Martine from the claim team for their empathy and the heartfelt message. I plan to send them a small gift as a token of appreciation soon. Thanks all.

A huge thank you to Shani! It was so nice to hear a familiar voice when we set up our 4th baby with PD pet insurance. She helped set us up originally and then again today with our rescued 'foster fail' dog Wilson. PD makes everything so simple and the peace of mind makes pet ownership as stress free as possible. Our pets get the best care without worry about cost whenever it's needed. Thanks again Shani!

Thank goodness for PD our Lab managed to get himself in trouble (eating something he shouldn't) The cost for all his care was over $7500 the same day he got his stiches out was the same day PD reimbursed us close to the full amount. For a simple $60 odd dollars a month the piece of mind is priceless and the service and communication was fantastic. Highly recommend PD to anyone that asks!!!!!!!! Cheers PD team

Absolutely recommended! Could not fault PD Insurance. Easy on-line claim experience, very quick acknowledgement, processing and payment of our claim. Very clear communication around what the reimbursement covered. I have no hesitation at all to recommend them to pet owners and we will be using them for our new furry family member that will be joining us soon. Great job PD Insurance!

PD Pet Insurance is Excellent. I have had a few claims unfortunately due to two very active dogs. The experience of my claims has been faultless. In most cases claims settled within day, I think the latest I’ve waited is a week. The process is straightforward and communications fantastic. I love the seamless process and the follow-up calls for longer problems to check on our dogs progress on the problem. Continue doing what you are doing, I appreciate the awesome service and cover.

Buyer beware. They took away the wellness benefits without notification upon renewal so I cannot claim on things like vaccinations anymore. If I had known this I would have shopped elsewhere. Used to be a good service but now I would suggest looking elsewhere

Very disappointing experience with PD Insurance I was paying for the top plan $115 a month my 8 month old pup had to get an X-ray done and unfortunately has a hereditary problem elbow dysplasia and needs to have a op done which is around 2-3k and in my plan it said hereditary problems are covered only to get turned down when trying to put a claim through as it says in their fine print dogs must be 2 years or older to be covered for hereditary problems which is ridiculous and I looked very closely at what was covered but must be very very hidden to be missed. It should definitely be put somewhere more obvious for breeds of dogs who are more likely to get it. I should have just put $115 a month aside instead of putting it towards insurance. If you are going to join with them definitely call them and speak to them instead of doing it online but I wouldn’t recommend.

We changed to PD from PetPlan when we purchased 2 new cats and 1 dog. Everything seemed straight forward when signing up and I thought PD sounded like it cared a bit more than some others so we gave them a go, but man I'm kicking myself now. We had 2 operations on our dogs eyes that our old provider and plenty of other providers cover, but good old PD had what I consider a hidden clause (clearly in the agreement, but nestled down in pages of other waffle) and was the only single operation that wasn't covered by our policy so you would of thought they would point that out as being something we needed to be aware of..........nope. So their tag like of 'If something happens to your fur baby, the last thing you want is to be left wondering whether you can afford medical care' was a total joke as just when we needed them they walked away.

Refused to pay. Covered for ingesting foreign object. Vet diagnosis dietary indiscretion. A very clear definition of dietary indiscretion is swallowing foreign object. PD did not pay

Not an accident?????? My dog went to after hours after getting through our baby gate and getting the lid off her biscuits she consumed a whole lot so I had to get her stomach flushed out. PD insurance claim that this is not an accident therefore will not pay out??? It blows my mind that they can get away with this and I would not recommend you take out pet insurance with them. I’m very angry.

For the second time, in regards to settling a claim I was advised that the payment being made into the nominated bank account is less the excess of $150. But the excess under the policy is $50. That's pretty stressful to me. However, the issue was sorted out on 4 July, although it is now 7 July and the amount has not come into the account. So an honest review at 1 star... even though I like your team a lot.

Is PD Insurance Trustworthy?

Yes, PD Insurance is one of New Zealand's most trustworthy pet insurance providers.

PD insurance is one of the few NZ insurance companies to specialize in only offering pet insurance - which means they don't have any other focus but to provide great pet insurance for Kiwi families.

More recently, PD Insurance has won Canstar’s 2022 Most Satisfied Customers – Pet Insurance Award along with MoneyHub’s “Favourite Pet Insurer” for 2023. They’ve also been honoured with the 2024 Reader’s Digest Quality Service Silver Award for Pet Insurance.

PD insurance is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance which has been around since 2001 and has a financial strength rating of B++ (Good) issued by A.M. Best (which is weaker than most pet insurance companies but still no cause for concern).

Otherwise, PD Insurance boasts 2 day claims processing (often its even quicker) in 95% of cases and has an easy to complete online claims form for all customers.

PD Insurance FAQs

  • PD Insurance has three pet insurance plans in New Zealand, an Accident, Classic and Deluxe Plan.

    • Accident Plan - A cheaper accident-only plan that also covers third party liability and vet consultations up to $5,000 per year with a fixed $100 to $200 excess.

    • Classic Plan - A mid-tier plan which covers accidents, illness, third party liability, vet consultations and hereditary conditions (that have not been present in the first years of life) with a $10,000 annual limit and fixed $100 to $200 excess.

    • Deluxe Plan - A comprehensive pet insurance plan which covers the conditions outlined above as well as dental treatments up to $20,000 a year with a fixed $100 to $200 excess.

  • We like PD Insurance Deluxe Plan best as it covers the most conditions (including dental) and has the highest policy limit ($20,000) while still having no co-payment and a small excess of $100, $150 or $200.

  • PD Insurance is more expensive than other pet insurances in New Zealand. This is primarily because all of their policies have no co-payment and a small excess of between $100 and $200. This means their monthly premiums are a bit higher than other pet insurances but it also means that no matter how big your vet bill is the most you will pay up to your policy limit is $200 for conditions covered by your policy (you will have to pay a higher  excess and a co-payment with most other pet insurers).

You'll find New Zealand's cheapest pet insurance plans here.

  • No, PD Insurance only offers cat insurance and dog insurance at the moment.

  • Yes, we rated PD Insurance higher than Southern Cross pet insurance.

PD Insurance's plans might have more expensive premiums than Southern Cross as well as more conditions and limits but we still think that the extra conditions covered by PD like dental and third party liability along with the small excess and no co-payment that you get with PD Insurance outweigh these factors.

  • Yes, we think PD Insurance has the best insurance plans in New Zealand.

While we really appreciate that Cove's plans are more affordable than PD's and have fewer condition limits along with a higher maximum policy limit of $25,000, PD's insurance has no co-payment on any of their plans and a small $100 to $200 excess meaning its unlikely you will ever have a large vet bill with PD while at Cove the excess is up to $1,000 per claim and the co-payment is up to 20% of every claim.

  • PD insurance is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance which has a financial strength rating of B++ (Good) issued by A.M. Best

Conclusion: Is PD Insurance Good?

Yes, PD Insurance is our top-rated pet insurance company in New Zealand. We think their Deluxe and Accident Plans are both excellent options whether you want a cheaper accident-only plan or a more comprehensive full-coverage plan.

The biggest thing we appreciate about PD Insurance pet insurance plans are that they have no co-payment and a maximum excess of $200. This means that when you claim for an eligible vet bill, the most you'll pay at the vet is $200 (up to your policy limit). Because PD covers extra conditions/treatments like dental, third party liability, and hereditary conditions you'll likely have the cover you need.

The biggest weakness to PD's pet insurance plans are the longer than average stand down periods and specific condition limits which include a maximum per claim limit of $5,000 on the Classic Plan and $7,500 on the Deluxe Plan. Check out our Cove Pet Insurance review or Southern Cross Pet Insurance review if you want pet insurance with very few condition limits.
