Feather is one of the few pet insurance providers in Germany designed for ex-pats. They offer their products to pet owners around the world, all in English, which has made them particularly popular for non-German speakers.
They offer health, surgery and liability insurance for cats and dogs with competitive cover, especially for owners who travel or move away from Germany and want to keep their insurance. We found their prices to be slightly higher than average and their policies slightly limiting with an €800 a year limit for non-surgical vet treatment and medication on the health plan, new policies only for pets aged 8 weeks to under 6 years, and no liability cover for 'dangerous' breeds.
Overall, Feather is a still a great pet insurance option, especially for ex-pats who want a modern, digital option where everything is easy to understand and best of all, all in English.

Getsafe is a fully digital insurer that has built a strong reputation in Germany for making insurance simple and accessible, especially for expats. Their pet health insurance covers dogs and cats across three plan levels, and their dog liability insurance is one of the few in Germany that accepts all breeds, including those classified as dangerous under German law.
Everything is managed through their app, from signing up to submitting claims. English support is available throughout. Premiums for dogs can be on the higher side compared to some competitors, but the coverage is broad and the flexibility to choose your deductible and plan level makes it easier to find something that fits your budget.

Dog liability insurance excludes some off-leash scenarios on lower plans
Lassie started in Sweden and has since expanded to Germany and France. In Germany they offer dog and cat insurance across Mini, Midi and Maxi plan levels, as well as dog liability insurance. Their app rewards preventive behaviour with premium discounts, which sets them apart from most competitors.
Lassie is available in English, which makes them an accessible option for expats. Their Mini plan has a low coverage ceiling that can be reached quickly, so we generally recommend looking at the Midi or Maxi plans if you want more meaningful protection. There are no breed restrictions, and coverage can start from 8 weeks of age with no upper age limit on entry.

Fewer English-language reviews available
Hepster is a German digital insurer offering pet health insurance for dogs and cats. Their plans are available in surgical and full coverage tiers, with no waiting period for accidents and worldwide coverage included from day one. Unlimited annual coverage is available on their top tier, and there is no fixed deductible on the full protection plans.
Hepster is less well known internationally than Feather or Getsafe, but they regularly appear near the top of German price comparison tables. Their website and customer service are primarily in German, so they may be less convenient for expats who are not comfortable navigating German-language platforms.
Barmenia Direkt is the direct-to-consumer arm of Barmenia (now BarmeniaGothaer), one of Germany's established insurance groups. Their pet health insurance covers dogs and cats in surgical and full protection tiers, with worldwide cover and a choice of deductible. Premiums are higher than most digital competitors, but the group's long track record in the German market is useful if you care about claims handling and financial stability.
English support is limited, and the process is less digital than Feather or Getsafe. OP plans typically have no annual surgery cap (up to 4x GOT). Full health tariffs can cap non-surgical treatment (for example €800 or €1,200 a year, or unlimited on some options), so check the tariff sheet before you buy. Facts checked on Barmenia pages and AVB on 6 November 2026.
Uelzener's dog health cover costs from €42.79 a month, which is on the expensive side, with annual limits of €3,000, €6,000 or no limit at all. We read these figures on Uelzener's dog health insurance page on 6 November 2026.
What you get for the price is cover that doesn't shrink as your dog gets older. Uelzener has no upper entry age, can cover a dog from its first day, pays up to 100% at any age and doesn't cancel your policy after a claim. The general waiting period is 30 days, or 5 days for accidents, and it's 6 months for neutering. A prevention add-on for things like vaccinations and check-ups costs €19.67 a month extra.
Uelzener has 4.3 stars on Trustpilot from 4,307 reviews, which we checked on 6 November 2026. Uelzener pays for a Trustpilot subscription and most of the recent reviews were invited, but one owner says all her dog's surgery bills were paid quickly and without problems. The site and documents are in German.
AGILA is a German pet insurer that sells dog and cat health cover in four tariffs. Basis pays 80% up to €3,000 a year from €20.18 a month, Komfort pays 90% up to €7,500 from €38.16, and Exklusiv pays 100% with no annual limit from €58.46. With Flex you set the reimbursement between 80% and 100% and pick your own limit. These figures come from AGILA's tariff overview dated June 2026, which we read on 6 November 2026.
The cover itself is strong. AGILA pays up to four times the GOT rate, doesn't exclude any breeds and keeps you covered abroad for up to 12 months. The catch is age. Your pet has to join before its 8th birthday, and from age 5 AGILA pays a maximum of 80% whatever tariff you're on. There's a one-month waiting period for illness, but none for road accidents.
AGILA has 4.1 stars on Trustpilot from 4,423 reviews, which we checked on 6 November 2026. Most reviewers are happy with how claims were handled, while the negative ones are mostly about premium rises and a dispute over cancelling after a pet died. Everything we read on AGILA's site, including the tariff documents, is in German.
Allianz sells dog and cat health cover in Germany in four tariffs. Basis costs from €30.31 a month with a €2,500 annual limit, Smart from €51.00 with €5,000, Komfort from €76.22 with €10,000 and Premium from €119.56 with no annual limit. Treatment without surgery has its own lower limit, from €1,000 on Basis up to €8,000 on Premium. We took these figures from the Allianz pet health insurance page on 6 November 2026.
The big plus is age. Allianz has no maximum entry age, so it's one of the few options if you're insuring an older pet for the first time, and cover is available from 8 weeks for any breed. You can choose no excess, 10% (capped at €500 per invoice) or 20% (capped at €1,000). There's a three-month waiting period for illness, which is long, but accidents are covered straight away and puppies under 6 months don't have to wait. Video vet calls are included around the clock, and bundling with Allianz dog liability cover saves up to 20%.
Allianz has 4.8 stars on Trustpilot from 20,487 reviews, which we checked on 6 November 2026, but that score covers the whole of Allianz Deutschland and not just pet insurance. The site and the policy documents are in German.
HanseMerkur sells dog health insurance in three tariffs. Komfort has a €2,500 annual limit, Premium €5,000 and Premium plus no limit at all. HanseMerkur's own price examples, for a young Jack Russell or Australian Shepherd with a €500 excess, are €28.19, €37.58 and €40.17 a month. You can pick no excess, €250 or €500 a year, but no excess is only possible if your dog joins before age 5. We read all of this on HanseMerkur's dog health insurance page on 6 November 2026.
The cover is broad. HanseMerkur pays up to four times the GOT rate, accepts all breeds and won't cancel your policy because of a claim. Premium covers hip and elbow dysplasia up to €5,000 after a 12-month wait, and Premium plus covers it with no limit after 6 months, while Komfort doesn't cover it. The general waiting period is one month, with none for accidents. Focus Money gave HanseMerkur its fairest pet insurer award, rated very good, in issue 13/2026, for the second year in a row.
Its Trustpilot score is much weaker at 2.3 from 10,245 reviews, which we checked on 6 November 2026. That score covers all of HanseMerkur, including health and travel insurance, but one of the latest reviews is from a dog owner whose pet policy was cancelled after three years. Lifetime cover is only guaranteed from the fourth policy year, so it's worth knowing before you sign. Dogs can join up to age 8, or age 3 for breeds in risk class E, and the site is in German.
DA Direkt sells dog health insurance in three tariffs. Komfort pays 60%, Premium 80% and Premium Plus 100%, and on Komfort and Premium you get 20% more back if you start with a free FirstVet video call and the online vet sends you on to your own vet. DA Direkt's example price is €38.90 a month on Komfort for a two-year-old mixed-breed dog up to 45 cm. We read this on DA Direkt's dog health insurance page on 6 November 2026.
There's no waiting period at all, which is rare, and DA Direkt pays up to four times the GOT rate. The limit is low in the first year, at €500, €1,000 or €1,500 depending on the tariff, and unlimited from the second year. Developmental disorders are capped at €2,500 per condition. DFSI rated the tariffs "BESTE" for the magazine €uro. We couldn't find a maximum entry age on that page.
DA Direkt has 3.8 stars on Trustpilot from 10,129 reviews, which we checked on 6 November 2026. That score is for the whole company and many of the recent reviews are about car insurance and long phone queues. The site is in German.
Detailed Reviews of Pet Insurances in Germany
Here is a closer look at each of the five pet insurers we recommend in Germany. All of them cover dogs and cats, and all reimburse costs based on the GOT rate.
Feather: Best for Expats
Feather is the most expat-friendly pet insurer in Germany. Their entire service runs in English, from the app and policy documents to customer support. That alone sets them apart from every other provider on this list.
They offer Surgery and Plus health plans plus dog liability insurance (Hundehaftpflicht). Surgery cover has no annual cap. On Plus, non-surgical treatment and medication are capped at €800 a year, with a €70 preventative allowance and €150 dental allowance, according to Feather's FAQ which we checked on 6 November 2026. The waiting period is 30 days for illness and none for accidents. New policies are only for pets aged 8 weeks to under 6 years, then cover continues for life if you keep the policy.
Feather is still the easiest pick if you want to quote, buy and claim in English, and temporary travel cover lasts up to 12 months worldwide.
Lassie: Best for Preventive Care
Lassie is a Swedish insurer that has expanded to Germany with a strong app-first approach. Their three tariffs (Mini, Midi and Maxi) cover unlimited surgery under all plans, with medical treatment limits scaling up as you move to higher tiers. Mini caps non-surgical treatment at €1,000 a year. Pets can join from 8 weeks of age with no upper entry age, which we confirmed on Lassie's help pages on 6 November 2026.
What makes Lassie stand out is their preventive care rewards system. Complete short courses in the Lassie app on pet health topics and earn points that reduce your annual premium by up to €50. If you like staying on top of your pet's health, that is a genuine benefit.
Waiting periods are 30 days for illness and 2 days for accidents (18 months for listed joint and eyelid conditions). All reimbursements are based on up to 4x the GOT rate.
Getsafe: Best for Flexible Cover
Getsafe is a German digital insurer offering three pet health tariffs: OP-Schutz Comfort (surgery only), Vollschutz Comfort (full cover with annual limits), and Vollschutz Premium (unlimited full cover). This structure makes it easy to pick what you need without paying for more.
Vollschutz Premium covers dogs and cats with unlimited annual benefits. Pets must be under 8 years old at entry. Claims are filed through the Getsafe app, and English support is available.
According to Getsafe's own product page and terms, which we checked on 6 November 2026, the general waiting period is 1 month for illness, accidents are covered from day one, and listed conditions such as hip dysplasia, allergies and epilepsy have a 12-month wait.
Hepster: Best for Customisable Coverage
Hepster offers modular pet insurance that lets you choose your coverage level online. Their plans cover medically necessary treatments and operations for dogs and cats, with reimbursements based on the GOT rate.
The main advantage of Hepster is flexibility. You configure your plan on their website and can adjust your coverage and deductible to fit your budget. It is a good option if you want something in between the cheapest surgery-only plans and full unlimited health cover.
Hepster is a smaller, newer player compared to Barmenia Direkt, but their digital-first approach keeps things simple.
Barmenia Direkt: Best for Traditional Cover
Barmenia Direkt is the online arm of Barmenia (now BarmeniaGothaer), a German insurer with roots going back over a century. If you prefer an established traditional insurer over a startup, Barmenia Direkt is a strong choice.
Their OP plans reimburse up to 4x GOT with no annual surgery cap. Full health tariffs can cap non-surgical treatment (for example €800 or €1,200 a year, or unlimited on some options), so read the tariff sheet before you buy. Waiting periods are typically 30 days for illness and none for accidents, which we checked against Barmenia's AVB on 6 November 2026.
English support is limited. Best if you can work in German or specifically want a traditional German brand.
How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost in Germany?
The price of pet insurance in Germany varies with species, breed, age and cover level. Rough 2026 ranges from insurer pages and market guides we checked on 6 November 2026:
Surgery-only (OP) plans often start around €6 to €15 a month for cats and €10 to €30 a month for dogs.
Full health plans (surgery + illness + medication) typically cost about €15 to €40 a month for cats and €25 to €70 a month for dogs.
Premium / high-limit dog plans can exceed €70 to €80 a month for older or large breeds.
All reimbursements are calculated against the GOT rate. Most insurers in Germany cover up to 4x GOT. A standard waiting period of about 30 days applies for illness, and a few days or none for accidents, depending on the insurer.
Ranges drawn from Feather, Lassie, Getsafe and Barmenia public pages checked on 6 November 2026. Your own quote will differ.
Choosing the Right Pet Insurance in Germany
With several solid options in Germany, the right insurer depends on what matters most to you as an expat or a traveller with a pet:
If you want everything in English: Feather and Getsafe both run fully in English, including their apps and customer support. Feather is particularly popular among expats.
If your pet is older than 6: Feather's entry age cap is under 6 years. Go with Getsafe (under 8 years) or Lassie (no upper age limit).
If you want the cheapest option: Lassie's Mini plan starts at around €14 a month and includes unlimited surgery coverage.
If you want unlimited coverage: Lassie Maxi, Getsafe Vollschutz Premium, and Hepster's top tier all offer no annual cap on the full plan.
If you want a traditional German insurer: Barmenia Direkt is backed by one of Germany's established insurance groups.
If you need Hundehaftpflicht: check your Land's rules first. Feather, Getsafe and Lassie all sell dog liability alongside health cover.
How we check prices
On 6 November 2026 we tried public quote flows for Feather, Getsafe and Lassie for three profiles (a 3-year-old mixed-breed dog about 15 kg in Berlin 10115, a 7-year-old Labrador, and a 2-year-old cat). The online calculators asked for owner details or an account before showing a premium, so we did not invent monthly prices. Published starting prices in the comparison table come from each insurer's own site.
What customers say
Public Trustpilot themes we read on 6 November 2026 (company-wide scores, not pet-only unless stated): Feather sits around 4.7/5 with praise for English support and fast claims, and some complaints about slow replies. Uelzener and AGILA sit around 4.1 to 4.3 with mostly invited reviews. HanseMerkur's overall score is much weaker at about 2.3 across all products, including a recent dog-policy cancellation complaint. We do not invent customer quotes, and usernames are omitted.
FAQ about Pet Insurance in Germany
No. Pet health insurance is not required by law in Germany. Dog liability insurance (Hundehaftpflicht) is mandatory for all dogs in seven Länder: Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thüringen. In Bayern and several other states it is only required for dangerous or listed dogs, or under local permit rules. We checked the 2026 state overview from Hundesteuer Gemeinden and AXA's Bundesländer table on 6 November 2026. Health insurance stays optional, but vet bills under the GOT scale make it worth having.
The GOT (Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte) is the official German veterinary fee schedule. Vets can charge between 1x and 4x the GOT rate depending on the complexity of the treatment. Most pet insurers in Germany reimburse up to 4x the GOT rate, which covers the vast majority of vet bills.
Yes. Feather and Getsafe offer fully English-language apps, websites, and customer support. Lassie also operates in English. Hepster and Barmenia Direkt are primarily German-language platforms, though you can still sign up online.
Yes. Most insurers have a 30-day waiting period for illness and 2 to 7 days for accidents. Some will waive the waiting period for puppies under 120 days old if you submit a health certificate from your vet.
It depends on the insurer. Feather accepts pets up to 6 years old at entry. Getsafe accepts up to 8 years. Lassie has no upper age limit. Once insured, all providers cover your pet for life regardless of age.
